Special Initiatives

St. John Ambulance has played an integral role in  fabric of Albertan communities since 1897. While our core services revolve around first aid training and community services we also offer a variety of initiatives for Albertans of all walks of life.


We Can Help Too! is a first aid and safety program specifically designed for students in grades 3 and 4. A set of ten lessons are presented here and can be delivered by teachers over a number of different sessions. Lessons can be presented individually or combined where time allows for longer periods offering flexibility that fits with the needs of any class or school group.

The St. John Babysitter Advantage© initiative allows us to provide subsidized rates for our Babysitting Basics course, to youth who may not have had the opportunity to attend such a course due to financial barriers. The course is intended for youths 11 – 16 years of age will be looking after young infants and children as they learn the general principles of care, as well as basic skills that will provide them with life-saving skills and prepare them for emergency situations.

Adam Piercey was a young worker who died as a result of injuries he sustained in a workplace accident. In his honour St John Ambulance has established the Adam Piercey Memorial Training Fund. This fund will be used to train youth in the Fort McMurray area in Standard First Aid. First Aid competitions have been a St. John Ambulance tradition since they were first introduced in England in 1880. The primary purpose of the competition is to provide teams an opportunity to test their First Aid knowledge and skills in a realistic simulated incident. Teams of up to four members from across the Province compete for the honour of being the top First Aid Team in one of five divisions: Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Medical First Responder, Advanced First Aid, and Emergency Responder.

The St. John Ambulance Run and Walk for LIFE! helps to support our 600+ volunteers throughout the province. Funds will help purchase equipment and ensure up-to-date training.
